More Municipalities Pass Dog Tethering Bylaws

Amherstburg and LaSalle are the latest municipalities to pass new dog safety bylaws.

Both municipalities now have limits to the amount of time a dog can be left tied up outside. Amherstburg set the limit at ten hours while LaSalle set the limit to four.

"It's bad for dogs because dogs that are tethered tend to be the more severe neglect situations. It's easy to have the out-of-site, out-of-mind and tethered dogs do tend to get tangled up limiting their ability to move," says Windsor-Essex County Humane Society CEO Melanie Coulter.

The bylaw also prohibits dogs riding in the bed of a pick-up truck, leaving your dog out in extreme weather and leaving dogs in cars in hot weather.

The only remaining municipalities that have not passed dog tethering bylaws are Leamington, Tecumseh and Lakeshore.

"It's also a community safety issue because tethered dogs are more likely to bite," says Coulter. "And even it's an issue for just resident safety and comfort because tethered dogs are more likely to bark."

Coulter says the Humane Society will be approaching these municipalities in the new year.
