Local Union To Honour Victims Of Violence

One Windsor labour union is taking a stand during the National Day of Commemoration and Action to End Violence Against Women.

Unifor Local 444 is holding a memorial ceremony on Sunday at 11:36am to honour women who have been victims of violence, including a local Chrysler plant worker who was murdered by her husband, the 14 women who were murdered in the Montreal Massacre at E'cole Polytechnique, as well as the high number of murdered or missing Aboriginal women.

Susan McKinnon, chairperson for the union's women's committee, says Unifor Local 444 is asking everyone in the community to take a stand to end abuse and violence everywhere.

"The violence needs to stop," she says. "We need to have the awareness, the information and, of course, now we're looking for action with our new Liberal government coming into Parliament."

The memorial ceremony will be held at the corner of Ypres Blvd. and Chrysler Center, across the road from the Chrysler assembly plant.

"It is very important to treat everyone with equality. Everyone is equal, they are human beings and they need respect," says McKinnon. "Nobody should be in fear of going into a street thinking their life [could] be taken at any given time."
