Longtime Amherstburg Firefighter Passes Away

A 40-year-old Amherstburg firefighter has died following a "courageous" battle with cancer.

Jason McLean passed away early Tuesday morning. He leaves behind his wife Claudette and two children, Jaxon and Dylynn.

McLean was a longtime firefighter in Amherstburg, serving since he was 18 years old.

Amherstburg firefighter Jason Durocher worked alongside McLean and says he often put others before himself.

"Jason would do anything for anybody any time of the day," Durocher says. "By far the most knowledgeable and skilled firefighter that I have ever had the pleasure of working with."

"In my opinion he was 150% of what a firefighter represents."

Family and friends say they'll remember him for his eagerness to help others and his meticulous touch.

“Amherstburg firefighters have been deeply affected by Jason’s death,” says fire chief Al Reaume. “Jason was a true professional and was greatly respected by his peers. We all want to express our profound sorrow to his wife and two children. This is a tragic loss to the family, the fire service and to the community.”

Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-5pm and 7-9pm at Families First Funeral Home in Amherstburg. A firefighter walk-through will take place at 7pm, followed by parish prayers at 8pm.

The funeral will take place Friday at 10:15am, proceeding to St. John the Baptist Church for 11am with final prayers to follow at Fire Station #2.
