Police Chiefs Against Legal Weed

As the Justin Trudeau-lead Liberal government comes into power, police chiefs like Windsor's Al Frederick are looking to fight the legalization of marijuana.

The change in legislation was a campaign promise of the new government, but Frederick thinks it would be a big mistake.

"We (police chiefs) strongly believe it leads to other drug consumption and trafficking. It leads to impairment, without question, and it's something that's very difficult (for officers) to detect." In saying that, Frederick believes legal marijuana will become a public safety issue with more people potentially driving while high.

Instead of legalizing or decriminalizing marijuana, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police suggests switching to a system which simply tickets residents found with small amounts of marijuana, instead of processing them as prisoners.
