High School Police Working

The Windsor Police Service's high school liaison program has helped drastically reduce youth crime in the city over the last seven years.

Constable Monique Bergeron works in four west-end schools, and says she deals with five or six issues per school, each day.

"Usually they'll save them up for me and at the beginning of the day we'll go through what needs to be taken care of, and that sort of thing," she explains. "Or if a student has asked to speak with me specifically. Sometimes they don't want to tell the staff, they feel more comfortable just speaking to me and seeing if it's a police matter."

Since 2008, the number of criminal offences charged against youth have come down by two thirds in Windsor.

Over that same time span, violent crime among youth has been cut in half.

Bergeron was one of three new high school liaisons being introduced by Windsor police at a news conference this week.
