Local Roads Before Bike Trails

Before Amherstburg pays for another county bike trail, one councillor wants to slow down and look at local roads first.

Councillor Leo Meloche says there needs to be a balance between the County Wide Active Transportation System and local repairs.

"I'm a biker, I really welcome the CWATS initiative," he says. "(But) we have roads that are in real poor condition in this town. The roads to get to the trails are in poor condition, so we need to address that issue."

CWATS will eventually include 800km of cycling paths across Essex County, with some of the cost being shared with each municipality.

"Slow it down a little bit instead of major initiatives," Meloche says.

Meloche wants to see a plan that would balance funding for both needs. He says one of the worst roads, which is being addressed right now, is Alma St. between Walker Rd. and Howard Ave.
