Flag Controversy Not Changing Policy

Don't expect Leamington council to reverse its policy on endorsements after the municipality received some backlash for refusing to fly the Franco-Ontarian flag this past Friday.

Deputy Mayor Hilda McDonald says the long-standing policy prevents the municipality from choosing which groups to support.

"We've just found it easier [to have the policy] because then you may have to have the debate at council 'well are you for this or are you against this,'" says McDonald. "We have enough on our plates."

McDonald doesn't see any appetite on council to revise or repeal the policy.

"I doubt it. I don't think any of us are looking to change it. It was certainly done with a lot of thought in mind," says McDonald.

The municipality does send a councillor to local French elementary school St. Michel for francophone celebrations held there.
