A controversial can of worms is being reopened at city hall, one that would see the hiring of a local auditor general.
Councillor Bill Marra says the position was disbanded a few years ago because of a personnel issue.
Now he thinks it's time to bring it back. "I just believe there's legislative authority available to us. In this day and age, it's accountability and transparency that's paramount in all levels of government," Marra says.
"We have auditor general functions at the federal and provincial levels of government, why not at the municipal level?"
The city currently contracts out auditing services through Pricewaterhouse Cooper. Marra says he wants to keep that agreement while adding an auditor general.
"It's not doubling on resources because there are things Pricewaterhouse cannot do. They don't have unfettered access to documents, they don't have the subpoena power," he says.
Council will debate the issue at an upcoming meeting.
