Parking Fee Cooking For Downtown Kingsville

Downtown businesses in Kingsville could soon be forced to pay for parking.

A bylaw requiring $250 a year per space is going to be considered at council's October 13 meeting.

Councillor and downtown business owner Tony Gaffan doesn't want to see the fee approved.

"I hope not, but there's always that possibility," says Gaffan. "It would be fair for [downtown businesses] to at least pay for the maintenance of the parking spots that are there right now."

Gaffan is worried a new parking fee could stop new businesses from setting up in Kingsville's downtown.

"We really didn't want to deter any new business and new fees to a business to come into our town," says Gaffan.

Part of the objective of the bylaw is to level the playing field for business in the town with administration noting businesses outside of the town's core have to pay to provide their own parking while downtown businesses benefits from public parking.
