WRH Struggling To Balance The Books

Windsor Regional Hospital is projecting a deficit to end the fiscal year.

Hospital CEO David Musyj says the province's new funding formula is pressuring their operations budget.

"We have some work to do to identify what our funding is actually going to be," says Musyj. "Having some discussions with the ministry and then going from there over the next month."

Musyj points to a $20-million a year shortfall in funding as a budget stress explaining the hospital doesn't get any money to pay for its 100 alternative level of care patients and carrying a deficit is a challenging option.

"When you get that waiver you have to show a plan to eliminate that deficit at the same time, so [the Erie-St. Clair LHIN] do not give you an opportunity to be carrying over deficits without a stated plan," says Musyj.

Musyj says firm numbers aren't available for the current deficit projection, but in May the deficit was projected to be $8.5-million. He adds there aren't any services at risk because of the deficit projection.
