UofW Moves Into New Downtown Location

The University of Windsor has begun the move into its newest building in downtown Windsor.

The university is currently in the process of filling classrooms and offices at the former Windsor Star building at the corner of Pitt St. and Ferry St. The newly renovated location will house UofW's School of Social Work and the Centre for Executive and Professional Education.

Director of Public Affairs and Communication John Coleman says the new downtown campus building reflects a new era for the university.

"It's a reflection of the university's commitment to both the community and students," he says. "This is going to be a substantial boost to the future of (Windsor's) downtown."

Around 500 students will attend classes at the school's newest location.

Coleman says construction will continue into the fall semester, but classrooms and offices will be completed and ready for use.

"You're going to get a historic sense of (the building) when you look out windows, but you're going to get state-of-the-art classrooms," he says. "I think when people see it and it's up and running, there's going to be a real 'wow' factor to it."

The university also plans to grow its campus downtown by utilizing the former Tunnel Bar-B-Q property and the Armouries for the School for Arts and Creative Innovation.

Coleman says those buildings are scheduled to be completed for September 2017, with the entire downtown campus project costing the university around $75-million.
