Mental Health Calls Costing Police

The Windsor Police Service has spent more than $500,000 this year on officers waiting for mental health patients to be admitted in hospital.

This includes calls for suicides, missing persons and substance abuse.

Chief Al Frederick says this puts a "huge drain" on police resources and they're trying to fix it.

"We have negotiations with the hospitals trying to expedite when we are with a patient at the hospital ... and get our officers back on the street as quick as possible," says Frederick.

Frederick says on average officers spend four to five hours in hospital for each mental health call.
