The Spirit of Ramadan Food Drive is spreading to other parts of Canada.
Organizer of Windsor's ninth annual event Sousan Khaled says a member of the local Muslim community moved to Halifax and brought the idea with him, where it was enthusiastically adopted. "A dentist over there, she decided, 'You know what? I want to take it on.' So I gave her all the information (on how to get started)," explains Khaled. "They did a bit better than us, they had t-shirts and a barbeque, I'm a little jealous."
This year's drive in Windsor and Essex County raised enough money for 1,500 bags of food and toiletries, which will be donated to 15 local charities.
Khaled says the one in Halifax had a goal of 500 bags for its first ever event, but ended up raising enough for 1,000. She hopes word of these successes spark Spirit of Ramadan Food Drives in more communities across the country, as it's been her dream from the beginning to at least see one in every province.
