Windsor Keeping An Eye On Deer

The City of Windsor plans to re-examine its white-tailed deer population in the west end, to see if control measures need to be taken.

Executive Director of Parks Phil Roberts says public outcry about a large number of nuisance deer, in 2002-2003, lead to a survey. It turned that there were just 18 deer in the area at the time.

The city now gets to see if the population's grown, and look at how to keep them off of new highways, if necessary. "If the deer are crossing a road in a particular location -- and they do that, they habituate to areas to cross -- you can warn motorists," explains Roberts. "You can put signage up at least. Or depending on the nature of the problem, you can perhaps divert them. You can put up fencing."

The parks director says a survey will be done from the air this fall or winter.

Roberts thinks the city will see a big change in how deer move throughout the west end because of the new Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Pkwy. He also believes that new fencing systems put up with the parkway project might be good enough to keep deer inside of wooded areas.
