City Tackling Bright Signs

The City of Windsor could soon have a new bylaw regulating how bright signs can be.

Adam Coates, an urban designer in the city's planning department, says the proposed new rules are set to go to council.

"During the night time hours, from dusk til dawn, the 500nits limit, that's about as bright as a television," says Coates.

The new rules may only affect newly installed signs and not ones already up.

"I would hope that if something was too bright the owner of the sign, if there was a problem, if there were accidents that were happening and shown it was a safety concern that they'd be open to the idea of turning the sign down," says Coates.

He adds the city has received one official complaint in the last three years regarding sign brightness and that the issue was resolved.
