The province will soon review how municipal police services are conducting street checks, in an effort to create a standardized model.
Windsor Police Chief Al Frederick says he's looking forward to the process because he believes his officers are doing their jobs properly when investigating suspicious activity. "We collect police checks on police actions, and it's all documented. The reasons for the stop are documented. So it's not random in any way, it's not targeted at individuals, and it's not racially motivated."
The provincial review is being spurred on by complaints from residents in the Toronto area, who believe police officers are randomly stopping people and putting names into the police data base without proper cause, in order to reach a quota.
There were 953 street checks submitted by Windsor police officers last year.
