University Recognized For Green Initiatives

The University of Windsor is one of the top five green universities in Canada according to a U.S. publication, the Princeton Review.

The publication looked at 353 schools across North America. The Canadian universities didn't make the top 50 overall, but three of the entries are new this year: the University of Windsor, the University of Calgary and the University of Victoria. Two schools, Western University located in London and the University of British Columbia were recognized last year.

University of Windsor President Alan Wildeman says the publication recognized many of the changes that have taken place on campus in the past few years. "Having the parking garage now, it has allowed us to take out some surface lots and whenever we can reduce surface parking, that's a big thing," he says. "The pedestrianization of Sunset Ave., taking things like the new engineering building, a very efficient building -- that helps."

It also looked at food sourcing. "One of the things that people look at when they're looking at the environmental footprint of something is from how far away do you source your food. Fortunately, Essex County has a lot of resources in it, a lot of great food in it and we do as much as we can to source food as locally as we can," says Wildeman.

Lewis and Clark College in Oregon came in first overall.
