War Relic Sparks Bomb Threat

All is quiet at the Royal Canadian Legion in Amherstburg after a bomb scare.

President of Branch 157 Dennis Purdie says one of the legionnaires had been cleaning out a back room and stumbled upon a war-time era ordnance. "The first police officer on scene here said, 'anybody pick that up?' And John said, 'I moved it and I picked it up, and it was heavy.' And (the officer) said, 'if you ever find anything like that again, do not pick it up.'"

Purdie says the bomb squad had been called in from Windsor, but officers in Amherstburg were able to determine it wasn't active before needing the squad's services.

The legion president says the ordnance had been donated about a year ago, to be displayed, but it got put into a storage room and left there. He adds they routinely get old war items donated, but this is the first time they were ever worried one might explode.
