The union representing paramedics with Essex-Windsor EMS is seeking legal advice after Essex County Council approved installing more cameras in ambulances.
CUPE Local 2974 president Ian Nash says there are already 13 ambulances rigged with cameras in the cab of the vehicle and in the back. Essex-Windsor EMS wants to install cameras on all 23 vehicles on the road.
Nash says he's raised privacy concerns with Essex-Windsor EMS but so far, he hasn't had a response. He calls it a violation of privacy for patients and believes the public should have a say. "There's no signage on the ambulance telling people that there could be video or audio recorded," he says. "There are times when people in the back of the ambulance are receiving treatment when they're disrobed, or they are unconscious. I think the public should be notified."
He also fears the employer could use the audio of paramedics decompressing after stressful calls against them. "They have a hard job. They all do a very good job. After a call, they sit there, and they talk about the call. It helps them debrief."
EMS Chief Bruce Krauter has been quoted saying the cameras are meant to protect paramedics from liability. However, Nash doesn't think they're necessary. "If the employer was so concerned about safety, why didn't they bring it to the health and safety committee? They never did."
