The 32nd annual Easter Seals Telethon has surpassed last year's fundraising efforts by over $50,000 in support of children and youth with physical disabilities.
The telethon raised $255,000 which will go towards providing financial assistance for families in need of equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and communication devices. The money raised also goes towards providing fully accessible summer camping and recreation opportunities.
Local media personalities, corporate sponsors and Easter Seals alumni attended the event to help raise funds.
Ram Sridhar, the district chair for Easter Seals in Windsor-Essex, says the cost of mobility equipment can be very high for families, especially as children with disabilities get older.
"The one thing with children is that they grow. So, that wheelchair may be good for couple years and then you might have to get a bigger one," he says. "It's not easy."
The telethon aired live on Sunday between 10am-4pm on CBC Windsor 9/Cable 10 and TV Cogeco Cable 11.
