Port Celebrates First Salty

The harbourmaster at the Port of Windsor says it's always a celebration when the first ocean-going vessel or "salty" of the year arrives.

It kicks off the shipping season, which started a week late this year because of heavy ice conditions on the Great Lakes.

The M/V Foragracht docked at Morterm Limited Friday. The crew unloaded her cargo before continuing their voyage into Lake Erie Monday morning. "Having Morterm, the only general cargo terminal in the Port of Windsor as part of our port landscape is critical," says Peter Berry. "They have made significant investments into specialized cargo handling equipment over the years, and their experience makes this terminal a premier Midwest distribution point for wind components as well as steel and bulk cargo."

Morterm Vice President Teresa Boutet says it's symbolic for her company and the community. "Not only does it let us know spring is finally here, but it marks the arrival of vital materials for local business."
