Heritage Tax Relief Not Easy

The City of Windsor wants to make owners of heritage properties work for tax rebates.

Council debated a model which would have seen owners get 10% of their property taxes back immediately, and up to 30% if they provide proof of renovations or updates.

But Councillor Jo-Anne Gignac thinks there needs to be more incentive for maintainance. "By giving across-the-board 10% tax relief, without expectations in terms of reinvesting that money into the home, just doesn't make sense to me."

The rest of council agrees with Gignac, so it removed the 10% rule and kept the 30% rebate for those who can show there's work being done on their property.

City administration is also looking into the potential of raising that rebate cap from 30% to 40%.
