Walkability Versus Parkability In Windsor

As bars, restaurants and shops in Walkerville grow in popularity, residents in the historic Windsor neighbourhood are having to park farther from their houses due to a lack of driveways and parking lots.

The city denied a couple from building a driveway on their property this week, because they would have to cut into a curb which had heritage designation.

Ward 4 Councillor Chris Holt stood behind the decision. "You do the curb-cut, you put driveways in; that breaks up the streetscape, that breaks up these long expanses of sidewalks. It really detracts from the walkability of the place," he explains.

Holt hopes to work with city administrators to come up with a parking plan for historic neighbourhoods, because he sees this becoming a major issue throughout all wards where businesses are beginning to thrive.
