A New Hope In Amherstburg

Amherstburg's new council is sworn in, bringing with it hope of a more positive atmosphere at town hall and in the community itself.

"It's quite a change in atmosphere," notes Gord Freeman, a former Amherstburg councillor who attended the swearing-in ceremony on Monday night. "As the mayor said about transparency, he's got that right on because there was no transparency in the last council."

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo, along with the rest of council, was sworn in Monday night at the Verdi Club. DiCarlo replaces the outgoing Wayne Hurst as mayor who decided not to run for re-election. Financial issues and a perceived divide on council created much controversy for the town over the last term.

"We know what has to be done and we're going to get at it," says Bart DiPasqaule, now sworn in as deputy mayor after serving as councillor on the last council. "It's a good feeling. I haven't had this feeling in ... ever. It seems like we're going to have a good group of people to work with."

In all, five new faces on council with only DiPasquale and Councillor Diane Pouget the returning members of the last council.
