Maybe More Community Gardens

If city council approves, the number of community gardens in Windsor could soon expand.

The report, already approved by Windsor's Environment, Transportation and Public Safety Standing Committee, recommends licensing growers.

Outgoing Councillor Alan Halberstadt says they would have to meet certain criteria. "They do need insurance. They would pretty well have to align themselves with a non-profit organization that would have that kind of insurance," he says. "You can not sell the product. It requires the care and maintenance of the site, restrictions on the use of chemicals."

There are currently 26 community gardens in parks across the city and Halberstadt thinks it could benefit the community by creating a more sustainable, local food source for low-income families.

He hopes the new rules go into effect in time for the next growing season.
