Diversity takes centre stage at U of W (VIDEO)

The University of Windsor joined its counterparts nationwide in celebrating diversity.

Friday was World Student Day at colleges and universities across Canada, and for the third year, U of W participated in an afternoon of colour, dance and music to call attention to the dozens of nationalities that make up its student population.

Students and faculty milled through the David A. Wilson Commons area as dancers in costume mingled and danced with students. Even Winston, the university's Lancer mascot, got in on the act.

The day began with inspirational speeches and a welcome from Dr. Douglas Kneale, interim president of the university. Then, according to Anouchka Plumb, U of W's manager of language programs and continuing education, the fun began.

"Students from a number of backgrounds are able to demonstrate some of their cultural dances, and we've had some participants from the audience be involved," said Plumb.

World Student Day is a project of Languages Canada, which represents about 210 language programs across the country. About 135,000 international students get a post-secondary education in Canada. At the University of Windsor, roughly a hundred countries are represented.

Plumb said U of W's celebration has grown since it began in 2017.

"This particular year we have joined with community organizations who are also part of the language sector, so the goal is to connect organizations and community," said Plumb.
