Sting sign skilled, diminutive forward from Pittsburgh

The Sarnia Sting have signed a diminutive, skilled forward from Pennsylvania.

16-year-old Ty Voit was born in Pittsburgh and had 18 points, including eight goals, in 18 games with the Penguins Elite U-15 team in 2018-2019.

Voit was chosen by the Sting in the 5th round, 89th overall, in this year's Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.

Listed on the Sting training camp roster at 5'7" 135 pounds, the right winger was also a member of the 2019 All-American Prospects U-15 team, recording three goals in six tournament games played.

Sting GM Nick Sinclair said Ty making the commitment to pursue his hockey career with the Sting is a "big day" for the OHL club.

"He possesses high-end skill and the ability to make elite offensive plays with little time and space," said Sinclair in a news release Monday afternoon. "His natural hockey instincts and I.Q. for the game will be exciting for Sting fans to watch. As Ty continues to develop and mature physically, he has the tools to be a very impactful player in the Ontario Hockey League in the years ahead."

Voit said he's very excited to get things started in Sarnia.

"I am honoured to commit to such a great organization in the Sting. I would like to thank my family, coaches, and past teammates who have all helped me earn this opportunity," said Voit. "I would also like to thank Mr. Sinclair, Mr. Hatcher and Mr. Legwand."

Voit is expected to suit up with the Sting when they take on the Soo Greyhounds in exhibition action at Chatham Memorial Arena on Thursday, September 12.
