Sting clinch seventh place with win over Spitfires

The Sarnia Sting are headed to the OHL playoffs.

Franco Sproviero scored the shootout winner as the Sting edged the visiting Windsor Spitfires 4-3 to clinch seventh place in the league's Western Conference. The Spitfires will also be in the post season, finishing eighth.

The teams will face-off against either London or Saginaw in the opening round.

Sean Josling (22) opened the scoring for Sarnia at 10:58 of the first period.

Braden Guy (19), returning from injury, made it 2-0 at the 17:19 mark of the first.

At 2:37 of the second frame Mitch Eliot (17) scored for Sarnia.

Then the Spitfires mounted a third period comeback with two goals from Jean-Luc Foudy (8) and a single from Connor Corcoran (10).

Ethan Langevin stopped 25 of 28 shots in the Sarnia net while the Sting peppered 35 shots at Windsor's Kari Piironen.

Spoviero, a native of Sarnia and first star of the game, honoured his family during a pre-game ceremony for Sting over-agers.

"It was an emotional night. I wanted to thank my parents and obviusly my brother and all the people who helped me along. Your families are the biggest part of your life and I'm just thankful to be playing in this league. It's a privilege. So the shootout winner at the end was the cherry on top for me."

The Sting complete the regular season with a home-and-home series against the Generals beginning Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in Flint and Sunday in Sarnia at 2:05 p.m.

Both games can be heard on 103.9 FM - 1070 AM CHOK.
