Legionnaires shoot down Stars 3-2

After having a week off, the Sarnia Legionnaires (7-5-0-1) beat the St. Thomas Stars (7-7-1-1) 3-2 on Thursday night in GOJHL hockey action at the Brock St. Barn.

St. Thomas opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the first, but Greg Hay tied the game with less than two minutes remaining in the period.

Ben Schoch and Jon Sanderson scored second period goals for the Legionnaires. The Stars edged closer with a late third period marker but Sarnia held on for the victory.

Legionnaires goalie Jakob Knowles turned aside 23 of 25 shots faced, while Anthony Hurtubise made 37 saves on 40 shots in the St. Thomas net.

Sarnia is fifth place in the Western Conference standings with 15 points, trailing the Stars by one point with three games in hand. The London Nationals lead the way with 27 points, and Chatham is second with 20.

The Legionnaires return to action on Saturday night in Komoka and will host the Kings next Thursday night.
