Jr. Hockey Wrap-Up - September 9, 2017

The GOJHL Showcase continued Saturday at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre in Brantford.

Tyler Russell scored twice in the LaSalle Vipers' 6-4 loss to the Ancaster Avalanche in their regular-season opener.

The Avalanche put up a three-spot in the first period with a trio of goals. Russell's first goal of the game got the Vipers on the board at 5:45 in the second period. Ancaster's Dirk Stadig gave his team a three-run lead soon after but LaSalle got it back on a goal by Kory Silverio. The Avalanche scored two more goals for a 6-2 lead after two periods.

The Vipers did all the scoring in the final period on goals from Eric Kirby and Russell's second of the evening.

Dershahn Stewart was in goal most of the game for the Vipers but James Walker took the loss. Ryan Dugas stopped 27 shots for the Avalanche.

LaSalle plays Listowel Sunday afternoon with a 5pm start.

The Niagara Falls Canucks scored four unanswered goals beginning in the second period, enough to bury the Sarnia Legionnaires 4-2.

The first stanza was scoreless, with eight shots-on-goal apiece and one failed power-play chance for Sarnia. Patrick McCabe, Matthew Caruso and Maxwell Lightfoot scored the Canuck goals in the second period, and Noah Boman added one for good measure at 71 seconds into the third period.

The Legionnaires got on the board with Aaron Jamieson scoring unassisted at 5:54 into the third. Brett Corrigan had the other Sarnia goal.

Will Barber faced 27 shots in goal for Legionnaires in the losing effort. Niagara Falls' Zach Moore took the win.

Sarnia's next opponent in the showcase is the Fort Erie Meteors, with a 10:30am puck drop Sunday.
