Franco Sproviero and Jaden Lindo each scored twice as the Sarnia Sting beat the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 7-3 Saturday afternoon at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
The Sting, currently in third place in the OHL West Division, gained a little ground on the division-leading Hounds with the win. The game was carried nationally by Sportsnet.
Sarnia began the game with three unanswered goals in the first period. Anthony Salinitri got things going with his 18th goal of the year at 4:53 into the opening stanza. Lindo doubled the Sting lead just 27 seconds later with Salinitri and Justin Fazio on the assists. Sproviero made the intermission score 3-0 Sarnia with his first goal of the afternoon less than two minutes before period`s end.
Lindo picked up where he left off at 3:50 of the second period with his second goal of the day, his 16th of the season. Jordan Kyrou found the net just 38 seconds later to give the Sting a commanding 5-0 lead. Sault Ste. Marie finally got on the board at 16:48 of the second when Tim Gettinger scored his 22nd goal of the year unassisted.
The third period saw Sarnia adding two more goals to its total. Sproviero came through with his second of the game at 8:59, shorthanded. Drake Rymsha connected for Sarnia at 11:28. The Hounds managed to salvage two scores before the end of the game. Hayden Verbeek and Blake Speers scored Sault Ste. Marie`s third period goals.
Jeff King picked up three assists for Sarnia and Fazio stopped 32 of the Greyhounds`35 shots on goal in net. Joseph Raaymakers allowed four goals in net for Sault Ste. Marie before being pulled early in the second period for Matthew Villalta.
The Sting`s next game is Friday night when they host the Flint Firebirds.
