Heading into his fourth season with the University of Waterloo, Paul Kaija knew it was going to be a learning year for one of the youngest teams in the country.
With an average age of 18.8 years, 46 players on the Waterloo roster were in their freshman season.
Leading a young team wasn't Kaija's only responsibility, he was also getting use to a new position as he made the switch from defensive end to linebacker.
The Northern Collegiate grad says he's adjusted well to the change.
"I think I have a better future at linebacker, I was a bit undersized on the defensive line, so I think linebacker is more my body type and skill set," says Kaija. "You're not really going up against those huge guys, you get some more options to make some moves and make plays."
Kaija averaged 4.4 tackles per games and finished the season with one interception and a forced fumble.
The engineer student received an invite to last year's CIS East-West bowl, but an injury prior to the game kept him from the line up. He's hoping for a similar opportunity again this year.
