Sutherland Cup Finals Gets Underway

The Sutherland Cup Finals get underway in Caledonia Thursday night.

The Corvairs are the heavy favourites, breezing through the playoffs up until this point with a 16-0 record.

Sarnia native Corey Pawley says despite their strong start to the playoffs the Nationals have proven they belong in the league finals.

"They've put in a lot of hard work to get to the finals, so they're obviously a great team if they made it there so we have to be ready for them."

Pawley is hoping to cap off his junior career with a Sutherland Cup victory. Fittingly enough, a career that began with London in the 2011-2012 season.

After being selected by the London Knights in the OHL draft he played seven games with the Nationals. He was later traded to Lambton Shores before graduating to the OHL.

The Sarnia native lead all GOJHL scores during the regular season and has 50 points in 16 playoff games.

He's not the only local connection in the final.

His Caledonia teammate Nick Zottl, who spent his OHL years with the Mississauga Steelheads, is also from Sarnia. They'll face of against Petrolia native Brenden Trottier, who was dealt to London in a trade deadline deal from Lambton Shores.

Pawley expects a much different London team then they faced to open the season in September, a game they won 6-0.

It was the only meeting between the two teams this season.
