MLB: Marcus Stroman flirted with a complete game on opening day, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-3 win in Tampa Bay. Stroman gave up three runs on six hits while pitching into the ninth inning. Elsewhere on opening day, Pittsburgh beat St. Louis 4-1 while Kansas City held on to beat the New York Mets 4-3 in a World Series rematch.

12 games on the Monday schedule, RA Dickey starts for Toronto in Tampa Bay, David Price makes his Boston Red Sox debut in Cleveland. Tigers fans will have to wait one more day, Justin Verlander will take the mound in Florida tomorrow night when Detroit takes on the Marlins.

OHL: The Sarnia Sting stay alive in their first round series with a 5-1 win in Sault Ste. Marie Sunday night. Pavel Zacha and Jakob Chychrun each scored twice as Sarnia faced elimination for the second straight night. The Sting will host the Greyhounds Tuesday for game seven. It's just the third game seven in Sting history, and their first since 2000. Elsewhere Sunday, London advanced with a 5-2 win in Owen Sound, Mississauga and Peterborough both forced game sevens with victories.

NHL: The Blackhawks beat the Bruins 6-4, Mark Scheifele scored his team-leading 27th goal of the season as Winnipeg beat Minnesota 5-1, Pittsburgh extended its win streak to six with a 6-2 victory over Philadelphia, St Louis over Colorado 5-1 and the Ducks beat Dallas 3-1. The Toronto Maple Leafs host the playoff-bound Florida Panthers Monday night in NHL action at Air Canada Centre. Steven Stamkos is scheduled to have surgery Monday on a blood clot in his right arm, sidelinine the Lightning captain for 1-3 months. Tampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman says it will be a couple of weeks before they know if his absense will be closer to one month or three. Stamkos has 36 goals and 64 points in 77 games this season

IIHF: Natalie Spooner scored a hat trick as Canada beat Finland 5-3 Sunday night in the semifinals of the 2016 Women's World Hockey Championships. USA beat Russia 9-0 in the other semis to set up the 18th gold medal game between the two countries in the tournament's history Monday night.

 

LOCAL

Sarnia's Michael Marinaro and his partner Kirsten Moore-Towers finished in 8th place finish at the 2016 World Figure Skating Championships in Boston. It was the pair's first appearance at the World's as a team.

Sarnia's Riley Wilhelm competed at the annual Broncos Classic where Western Michigan University competes against Eastern Michigan athletes. The St Patrick's High School graduate won discus with a throw of 42.36m. In her other throwing events she finished seventh in hammer throw and third in shot put.

The Twin Bridges Thunder U-14 girls volleyball team won the silver medal at the Ontario Volleyball Association's provincial championship on the weekend in Waterloo.

The Colorado Jr. Eagles (WSHL) have advanced to the Thorne Cup after clinching the Mountain Division and most recently the Plains Division. Five local players from Sarnia-Lambton suit up the Jr. Eagles.
