Win Gives Sting Share Of Division Lead

The Sting scored five second period goals en route to a 6-2 win in Guelph Friday night, picking up their 30th win of the season.

Nikita Korostelev, who was playing his first game since January 8, opened the scoring 8:37 into the game. That would be the period's only goal despite Sarnia holding a 15-12 shot advantage through the opening frame.

Sarnia would take control in the second, Korostelev scoring his second of the night on a hard shot that eluded Guelph goalie Michael Giugovaz, the reigning OHL goaltender of the month. Jordan Kyrou beat Giugovaz on a breakaway just 39 seconds later, tricking the overage netminder with a nifty backhand deke. Travis Konecny would score a pair and Patrick White added another to cap off the big period for the Sting. Konecny's second came with just four seconds left in the middle stanza. The goal was one of two powerplay goals for Sarnia on the night.

Guelph was able to get on the scoreboard in the third, when Luke Burghardt chipped a shot by the catching arm of Justin Fazio, who stopped all 24 shots he faced when Sarnia beat Guelph 7-0 November 14. Isaac Ratcliffe added another goal for Guelph but that is as close as the home team would come.

With the Sting's win Friday night, and a Windsor loss, the two teams are now tied atop the West Division with 67 points.

Sarnia will have a big test Saturday night when they host London, looking to end a lengthy losing streak against the Knights.
