Police services in Sarnia-Lambton are urging drivers to stay vigilant as students return to classrooms.
Sarnia Police Service (SPS) Community Engagement Officer Cst. Nick McLean said failing to stop for a school bus or crossing guard could result in hefty penalties.
"If you fail to stop for a school bus when the overhead red signal lights are flashing, a police officer can give you a ticket for $490 and six demerit points. If you fail to stop for a crossing guard displaying a school crossing stop sign, a police officer can give you a ticket for $365 and four demerit points, and the fines increase if it is in a community safety zone."
McLean said more importantly, failing to follow the rules of the road could result in a collision, which may impact the lives of anyone involved.
As a father himself, McLean said he knows kids can become distracted and sometimes walk onto the road.
"Ultimately, drivers need to be aware of their surroundings and remain alert," he said. "So they're prepared and ready to stop if something unexpected happens."
Parents and guardians are also encouraged to talk to their children about road safety while waiting for the bus, or walking or biking to school.
McLean said members of the public who witness traffic violations are encouraged to report them to the SPS either by calling or submitting a tip online.
Meanwhile, Lambton OPP will be conducting increased patrols in school zones and along bus routes during the back-to-school season.
With a similar message to motorists and students, OPP also encouraged children to stay seated while the school bus is moving, and for students riding bikes to school to remember their helmets.
"Every driver plays a role in keeping children safe this school year. Whether it's stopping for a school bus, staying alert while driving through school zones, or reducing distractions behind the wheel, your choices matter," said Lambton OPP Interim Detachment Commander Insp. Ross Stuart in a media release. "A few extra moments of patience can make all the difference in keeping our children safe. Traffic safety is everyone's responsibility."
