Boat destroyed by fire at Mooretown Launch

A Saturday evening sail didn't go as planned for one boater.

The St. Clair Township Fire Department was called to the Mooretown boat launch at around 5 p.m. for a boat fire.

Fire Chief Richard Boyes said an operator had launched the vessel when it caught fire in the ramp area.

"The operator tried to extinguish it with his fire extinguisher but it didn't work, so we wound up putting it out," said Boyes.

He said the cause of the blaze was engine malfunction.

The boat, a 21 foot Four Winns, was destroyed.

"As soon as we got the fire, we had the operator put it up in the trailer and get it out of the water, so there's no water contamination," said Boyes.

No injuries were reported.
