A petition asking for Marilyn Gladu's resignation has garnered thousands of signatures since the local MP announced she's joining the Carney Liberals.
The online petition through change.org said the Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong MP's decision to cross the floor and join the Liberal Party represents a serious breach of trust.
"We, the undersigned, call on MP Marilyn Gladu to resign her seat and allow her constituents the opportunity to decide whether they support her new political alignment. Canadians deserve representatives who uphold their commitments and respect the democratic process," read the petition.
As of Thursday morning, the document had over 3,700 signatures.
Meanwhile, another petition that was sponsored in December 2025 by neighbouring MP Liane Rood in Middlesex-London has nearly 73,000 signatures.
It calls for the House of Commons to amend the Parliament of Canada Act to require that any Member of Parliament who crosses the floor to join another registered political party must vacate their seat and trigger a by-election in their riding, while permitting them to sit as an independent without such a requirement.
At the time, Marilyn Gladu told the Petrolia Independent, she backed the call for automatic by-elections when an MP defects.
The online petition is open until April 17.
It was launched after two Conservative MPs crossed the floor to join the Liberal party in December.
