United Way campaign sets sights on $1M

The annual Sarnia-Lambton United Way campaign is inching towards the million dollar mark.

Volunteer President Jason Killingsworth said so far they've raised nearly $900,000 or 60 per cent of the $1.5 million goal.

He said there are concerns the campaign could fall short this year.

"We are about four per cent behind last year's totals," said Killingsworth. "There's a lot of fiscal restraint going on in society right now, but this is such a worthy cause, again the agencies that we fund, really do need our help. We're really fortunate in Sarnia-Lambton because we have a very generous community, and we have fantastic donors that have supported us year after year."

A number of campaigns are still underway in support of the fundraising effort, including NOVA's employee and retiree campaign. NOVA has already surpassed employee totals raised last year, and retirees have until November 28 to get their donation in to be eligible for a match by NOVA.

Bagel Madness continues for the remainder of the month at Bagel Factory. Killingsworth said $1 from every dozen bagels sold will be donated to the United Way.

"Imperial is still working on their employee campaign," he said. "On Friday, November 21 they will hold their first annual United Way Hockey Tournament at the Clearwater Arena. So far, over 70 players have registered with the hopes of getting another 10 to 20 in time for the event."

November also saw the launch of the second annual Novemburger, in which $2 from specialty burgers at participating restaurants will go to the United Way.

A total of 16 local agencies receive funding from the United Way including the Inn of the Good Shepherd, Lambton Elderly Outreach, and BGC Sarnia-Lambton.

The annual campaign continues to the end of the year.
