Feedback encourages neighbourhood harmony for future Bayside Centre development

The new developer of the former Bayside Centre site says feedback from residents has been clear, they love the location and the historical vibe surrounding the site.

Elevate Living asked residents to participate in its survey last month, after being revealed as the purchaser of the former mall site from Seasons Retirement Communities.

The Welland based company wanted to know what type of development would suit the property.

President Drew Toth said while just under two dozen people participated in the survey, the feedback clearly stated that residents "love their historical downtown" and its proximity to parks and the waterfront.

"There is a common desire for housing, as well as a commercial application," said Toth. "Many folks also shared concerns that we think are commonplace throughout the province."

Concerns included safety, transit and a desire for more activity in the downtown core.

"The feedback is helpful in assessing the site and aligning community preferences wherever possible for our submission for development," Toth added. "It also gives an opportunity for discussion with future community partners, like established grocery stores or other commercial partners to see if or how the site could match their standard specification requirements.”

Residents expressed a desire for a mix of housing types including; townhomes, an apartment or condo style building, and highlighted a need for affordable, attainable and quality units.

Toth said the historical nature of Sarnia’s downtown will be a very important piece in any plans, but the development must be one that's still relevant in 100 years. Toth said Elevate Living will engage further with residents when developing an exterior design and considering the building's name.
