An underdog story is being celebrated in Port Lambton.
The Pirates U18 Rep baseball team brought home its first ever OBA "A" level provincial championship this past weekend, despite being listed as a "D" level centre.
The competition took place in Stratford, where the Pirates wanted to challenge themselves against larger organizations.
Their opponents included Windsor, London, Ajax, Stratford, Brockville, Sault Ste. Marie, Woodstock, Barrie, Mississauga, St. Marys, Caledonia, and Toronto.
Port Lambton defeated defending champion Stratford twice, including an exciting 10-9 walk-off victory in extra innings in Sunday's championship final.
The contest ended in the bottom of the 8th inning when Jace Burgess laid down a bunt, and Duncan Smith scored with some heads-up baserunning.
Ethan Rosseel was named the tournament MVP with a batting average of .500, driving in seven runs.
In a post to their website, the club said the third-year players led the way.
Caleb Rosseel scored six runs and made crucial catches in the outfield, and Jacob Helps pitched with an ERA of zero.
Jake Fields only allowed an opposing batting average of .154. Reid Whitmarsh was on base 60 per cent of the time at the plate and scored 10 runs to lead the team.
The first-year players also contributed in key ways.
Matt Johnston scored a key run and made a game-saving catch in left field. Seth Highfield delivered two doubles and scored four runs at the plate.
Graeme Hazzard delivered 12 strikeouts on the mound as a pitcher and scored three times as a batter.
The team was led by Chris Bonneau, Jake Prudom, Alan Hillis, and Nash Lane.
