Annual Sarnia event seeks to create 'sense of community'

There will be plenty to do in downtown Sarnia as the long weekend also falls on First Friday.

Refined Fool's location on Davis Street will host its annual Fool Fest on Friday, August 1, and Saturday, August 2.

General Manager of Taprooms and Event Coordinator Billie Jo Gage said they started June Classic and Fool Fest approximately four or five years ago as a way to attract residents to the downtown area.

"Just building a sense of community downtown with music and art really is my goal -- and our goal as a business," Gage said. "Having it free for anyone to come just kind of adds a different element to it."

Gage said there's also the opportunity for people to walk around and visit other local businesses during First Friday.

Refined Fool's parking lot will host bands on Friday from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.

On Saturday, an art market will be set up from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. with about a dozen vendors.

Gage said the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery will be offering temporary tattoos, and the Sarnia Saints Rugby Club will be running games and providing information about its summer girls' sports camp.

"The music will start back up again at 7 p.m. on Saturday. We have an opener, and then we have the video dance party with Ian Alexander [from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m.], so there'll be some screens," she said. "Ian does dance parties at our London Road location -- he has for a couple of years, and they are always packed."

Gage said they expect to see 200 to 300 people on Friday and approximately 400 people on Saturday.

An outdoor beer garden will be set up outside for Fool Fest and food will be available. Further details can be found on the event's Facebook page.
