The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has not found evidence to suggest a Sarnia police officer committed wrongdoing in a March collision.
On the afternoon of March 27, Sarnia police tried to pull over a motorcycle, but the rider refused to stop and accelerated. The officer stopped pursuing the motorcycle and notified the dispatcher.
The motorcycle collided with another vehicle a short time later. The rider was thrown from it and suffered serious leg injuries. He was treated at Bluewater Health, where the rider's foot was partially amputated.
In a report released on Friday, SIU Director Joseph Martino said he believed the officer had a legitimate reason to stop the motorcycle and was not responsible for the crash. There will be no criminal charges filed.
"The [officer's] speeds were never so high as to compromise his ability to control the cruiser, there is no evidence of third-party motorists having had to take evasive action to avoid the cruiser," wrote Martino.
