Another round of scientific testing is scheduled to begin at Waste Management's Petrolia Landfill on Oil Heritage Road this week.
The activities are part of an international research initiative by St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, that builds on previous work from 2023 and 2024.
The tests -- to evaluate a range of methane detection technologies that can help improve environmental monitoring and support long-term sustainability -- are planned between June 2 - 15.
The project has been approved by both the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, and the Ontario Technical Standards and Safety Authority.
To safely simulate the release of methane, natural gas will be released under controlled and safe conditions -- monitored by university researchers.
Increased activity may be may be noticeable around the landfill during the testing period.
Flying drones, planes, helicopters, and other specialized equipment will be carrying methane detectors.
Previous testing was completed in May.
The Petrolia site stopped accepting waste in 2016.
