Commemorative walk recognizes pregnancy, infant loss

Community members will gather at Canatara Park for "A Walk to Remember" to support those who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss.

A commemorative walk, organized by the PAIL (Pregnancy and Infant Loss) Network and The Valeria Fund, will be held on Sunday, June 1, from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Participants will gather at the children's playground pavilion for a three to five kilometre walk, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The walk is expected to take about an hour.

Local resident Lo-Anne Chan founded The Valeria Fund in memory of her youngest daughter who was born on April 16, 2023. She sadly passed away after an hour with her family due to a pre-existing genetic condition.

"The one thing that helped keep our heads above the water was the constant theme of comfort and care exhibited by all the medical professionals that we met," said Chan in a statement. "They knew that they could not take away our pain, but they would be there to support us through the journey."

The Valeria Fund raises money for Bluewater Health's Maternal Infant Care to provide comfort kits for grieving families and advocates for proper supports following pregnancy or infant loss.

Meanwhile, the Sunnybrook PAIL Network is an organization that offers free peer-support services across Ontario.

Sarnia is one of 24 Walk to Remember locations.
