Knife and fruit used in alleged assault

A cyclist is facing weapons related charges in a traffic incident Monday morning.

Sarnia police officers responded to a weapons call on Bright Street just after 9:30 a.m.

It's alleged a motorist honked the horn at a cyclist who was driving down the middle of the road, impeding traffic.

Police said the male cyclist then threw a piece of watermelon inside the vehicle, hitting a passenger in the head.

The driver got out of the vehicle and confronted the cyclist, who allegedly produced a knife and threatened them. Police said the driver then grabbed an object to protect himself and the cyclist took off.

The 58-year-old male cyclist was arrested a short distance away and charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, failing to comply with probation and possession of a dangerous weapon.
