Bluewater Health's Addiction Services team is preparing to launch a new peer-support program for first responders and healthcare workers who struggle with substance misuse and dependence.
Integrated Director for Mental Health and Addiction Services Donna Morreau said the free program will be led by addiction counsellors.
"The reason we started this program, there was some ask from first responders and health care workers facing unique challenges including high stress trauma, exposure and stigma around seeking help for substance misuse," she said. "Shame and guilt often prevent people from seeking help."
Morreau said there is an education component to the program, where topics discussed will include stigma and denial, resiliency, relapse prevention, and anxiety.
"I think it's a great service to offer," she said.
Sessions will be held every other Wednesday, beginning on March 19 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Meetings will be held at Bluewater Health's Russell Building, at 89 Norman St. in Sarnia, on level six.
The program is drop-in, so Morreau said the number of participants could vary each session.
