Two families have received the keys for their new homes, thanks to Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton.
The keys for both homes on Grey Crescent in Sarnia were handed to both families during a ceremony on Wednesday, February 26.
The first home will go to a single mother with one child and the second will go to a single mother with two children.
"It always warms the heart that we can do this for people that are in need and just sort of gives them a leg up for the future, so we're extremely excited," said CEO David Waters.
He said the families are excited to move into their new homes.
"[They're] amazed that they can be in this position because in this current climate of how expensive rental is, how expensive it is to buy in the open market, this is sort of an opportunity for these families who otherwise wouldn't have it," Waters said.
The one home has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an unfinished basement and the other has two bedrooms, one bathroom and an unfinished basement.
Waters said the families can now move in.
"If we can think back to our first home or first apartment or wherever it was, it's ours so they're excited," he said.
Habitat Canada CEO Pedro Berata said this is a special moment for the families.
"This home, it's not just a roof over your head. This home and having these roots in the community are going to be absolutely fantastic for you, for your kids, for your future and for this entire community," he said.
In the spring, the organization will return to finish the landscaping.
The two new homes mark numbers 79 and 80 for Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton.
The Government of Canada committed $368,000 through the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Strategy towards Habitat Sarnia-Lambton projects.
In 2025, a new home and fourplex will break ground in Forest.
