Area snowmobilers revel in local conditions

The president of the Warwick Snowmobile Club says this year's conditions are the best they've had in over 10 years.

Derek Clark told Sarnia News Today his group couldn't be happier.

"The club is volunteer based," said Clark. "We have at least 40 volunteer members helping set trails up. We have 12 guys running the groomer that keeps the trails nice and smooth. It gets busy."

He said the trails are groomed at least twice a week.

"We manage around 170 kilometres of trail in our club, but with the OFSC (Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs) total there's 30,000 kms of trail. As of right now there is 28,198 active kms of trail," Clark said.

The Warwick Snowmobile Club operates three clubhouses as warming stations. They're located in Camlachie, just south of Forest, and just outside of Warwick.

"There are trail heads that start in Camlachie, Wyoming and Watford. The trails go all the way out to Port Franks, Thedford, Parkhill, and Arkona, and then they branch off into the other clubs that can take you further north," Clark said.

He said the biggest issue they have is keeping snowmobilers on the trails.

"All of these generous farmers are giving us their land to use for this trail system, so that's a big thing. There are speed limits on the trails. There's the same rules of the road and police will enforce them if need be," Clark said.

What's being referred to as a "comeback season" for snowmobiling was especially noticeable over the Family Day weekend.

Clark said at least 400 snowmobiles attended an appreciation event they hosted.

"We have staging areas at the liquor store at Reeces Corners and Sawmill Creek. Those parking lots are full with trucks and trailers. We're seeing people from all over... [including] Windsor, Chatham and Wallaceburg," he said.

Clark said information on future events will be shared to the club's Facebook page.

Interactive trail guides can be found on the OFSC's website, or by downloading the Go Snowmobiling Ontario Interactive Trail Guide app.
