Backyard chickens to be explored in two Lambton municipalities

The Town of Petrolia will gauge public interest in backyard chickens.

Council supported a motion brought forward by councillor Chad Hyatt during Tuesday night's meeting, to move forward on a two-step process to gather public input on the matter.

A survey will be released in the near future, followed by a public meeting.

Further details, including a meeting date, were not immediately available.

In Lambton Shores, council directed staff to investigate different options available and report back at a later date.

Currently there is no bylaw allowing backyard chickens in Lambton Shores or Petrolia.

Last month, Sarnia council amended its bylaw to allow up to six standard-sized hens within the city's urban boundary.

Raising a combination of miniature, bantam or standard size chickens is still prohibited.
